Description

Detached single-bay former goods shed, built 1895, now in use as private residence, and having recessed single-bay former office to north-east end having lower roof. Recent additions to rear and to south-west end. Pitched slate roof with decoratively tiled ridge, brick chimneystack, tooled limestone copings to gables and cast-iron and replacement aluminium rainwater goods. Dormer windows to south-west end of front and rear elevations and recent skylight towards middle of roof. Coursed rubble limestone walls with block and start brick quoins. Round oculus windows to gables with red brick surrounds and stained glass. Segmental-arched vehicular entrance to road elevation with block-and-start brick surround and replacement double-leaf timber battened doors having original iron runner for sliding doors. Other doors and windows are recent additions. Gateway to south-west of building formerly part of operation of level crossing.

Appraisal

This solidly built structure was designed for use as a goods shed during the heyday of the Connemara railway. The construction methods and style of the time are apparent in the round windows in the gables. It forms a group with the other railway structures at the former Ballynahinch Railway Station.
