Description

Detached three-bay single-storey gate lodge, built c.1810, with extension to rear. Associated with house that has now been demolished and that stood on opposite side of road. Pyramidal slated roof with wide eaves and central chimneystack. Rendered and painted walls with raised quoins. Pointed-arch windows with tooled limestone 'Gothick' surrounds with imposts and limestone sills, with six-over-six pane timber sliding sash windows with original switch-track tracery and much original glass. Pointed-arch doorcase of same style as windows and having switch-track tracery glazing to fanlight, and replacement timber panelled door.

Appraisal

This gate lodge, known as "Grand Lodge", is a very pleasant eyecatcher in the local roadscape. Its detailing is of very good quality and the retention of its unusual traceried windows and fanlight, together with excellent limestone dressings, makes it a building of special character.
