Description

Wall-mounted cast-iron post box, c.1905, with raised “ER VII” royal cipher. Set in painted rendered, ruled and lined wall.

Appraisal

This post box, which remains in use, is an important surviving artefact of early mass-produced cast-iron work. The raised detailing throughout serves to enhance the design quality of the composition, while the royal cipher in particular is of significance as a tangible reminder of Ireland as part of the British Empire.
