Appraisal

A fine gate lodge of austere appearance, built to designs prepared by Charles Frederick Anderson (b. 1802, ret. 1866), which has been very well maintained to present an early aspect, and reasonably well extended with an additional range discreetly planned so as not to detract from the appearance of the original portion. The construction of the gate lodge in fine sandstone ashlar attests to expertise of stone masons and craftsmen contracted by de la Poer family in the development of the estate in the mid nineteenth century. The gate lodge, together with the attendant gateway (22900213/WD-02-13), forms an attractive landmark in the locality.
