Description

Detached single-bay single-stage rubble stone lime kiln, c.1800. Restored, pre-1999. Now disused. Random rubble stone walls with full-height pilasters continuing into rubble stone parapet forming battlements. Shallow segmental-headed opening to oven with cut-stone voussoirs. Set into incline of hill with forecourt having random rubble stone curved flanking walls.

Appraisal

A lime kiln of considerable importance as an example of a small-scale communal structure of industrial heritage significance. The architectural quality, as identified by the full-height pilasters forming a battlemented treatment to the parapet, is unusual in such a functional piece, and suggests that the lime kiln may also have been intended as a folly-style eye-catcher. Restored in the late twentieth century, the original form and early character remain intact, and the lime kiln presents an attractive feature in the locality, integrated into the landscape through its position set into the slope of a hill.
