Description

Gateway, c.1850, comprising pair of inscribed limestone ashlar piers having moulded necking, cornices, capping, decorative cast-iron double gates having foliate finials, and sections of cast-iron curved flanking railings (incorporating pedestrian gateway to south) with spear-head finials. Road fronted in grounds shared with Woodhouse at entrance to estate.

Appraisal

An elegantly-composed gateway incorporating fine stone work to the piers, together with early-surviving mass-produced cast-iron ware that enhances the artistic design quality of the composition. The gateway, together with the attendant gate lodge (22811010/WD-32-11-10), is of significance as part of the Woodhouse estate, and forms an attractive feature in the street scene.
