Terraced two-bay two-storey house, c.1830. Renovated, c.1880, with shopfront inserted to right ground floor. Extensively renovated, pre-1999. Now entirely in residential use. Pitched (shared) roof with replacement artificial slate, pre-1999, clay ridge tiles, no chimney stack, and cast-iron rainwater goods on overhanging rendered eaves. Painted rendered walls. Square-headed window openings with rendered sills, and replacement uPVC casement windows, pre-1999. Square-headed door opening with replacement glazed timber panelled door, c.1980. Timber shopfront, c.1880, comprising square-headed window opening with rendered sill, fixed-pane timber display window, fluted flanking pilasters having timber fascia over with raised lettering, and moulded cornice. Road fronted with concrete footpath to front.
An appealing, small-scale house incorporating a distinctive window surround-style shopfront with raised lettering, which has survived intact despite the re-adaptation of the ground floor to residential use. However, the substantial replacement of the original fabric to the remainder has not had a positive impact on the external appearance of the house. Nevertheless, the house remains an important component of the streetscape of Chapel Street.
