Appraisal

This gateway and section of boundary wall is of significance as a reminder of the military barracks complex that once formed an almost independent urban centre in Waterford City. The construction of the gateway is particularly fine and attests to high quality stone masonry, while the flanking walls are constructed in a traditional manner that assimilates well into the surrounding landscape. The gateway and boundary wall form a picturesque feature of historic interest in the streetscape of Newport Square.
