Description

Freestanding railway footbridge, erected 1848, comprising cast-iron depressed-arch with latticed parapets, supported on cast-iron columns with ornate foliate capitals, having cast-iron staircases with latticed sides and decorative stair risers, cast-iron balusters and ball-topped newel posts. Later steel girders support west staircase. Moulded concrete telephone box under eastern staircase.

Appraisal

This footbridge is of high artistic value, with decorative foliate motifs to the balustrades and foliate capitals to the cast-iron capitals. It forms part of an interesting group of railway buildings with the station building, the waiting room, workers' houses and the road bridge.
