Twelve-arch road bridge over fork of River Suir, built c.1500 and rebuilt c.1770. Roughly coursed rubble limestone walls with roughly dressed limestone voussoirs to segmental arches. Soffits of arches concreted. Central arch now disused. V-plan ashlar limestone cut-waters to northwest elevation. Island in middle of river has remains of tower house which defended bridge, with bronze portrait of Thomas McDonagh to front of tower house.
This large, sweeping bridge of strong construction forms a prominent an ancient landmark in Golden. It spans two channels of the River Suir in a curve of graceful arches. The bridge is a technical, architectural and engineering achievement. The ruined tower house adds context to the site.
