Description

Detached five-bay three-storey former flour and saw mill, built c. 1840. No roof. Rubble sandstone and limestone walls. Square-headed window and door openings with roughly dressed sandstone voussoirs.

Appraisal

The remains of this former flour, and later saw, mill serve as a reminder of the past economic prosperity and industrial heritage of Ballingarry. It was destroyed by fire 5 January 1949. Although in a state of ruin, the building still retains evidence of solid construction and simple detailing. There is a date stone, 1845 with a name O'Grady to the front elevation. The dating of the building Is uncertain. The complex is shown on the first edition 6 inch OS map, surveyed 1 January 1841. It is possible that the 1845 date is of an extension to the original complex or marks a change in ownership.
