Description

Cast-iron post box, c. 1925, now in disuse. Fixed to cast-iron post having chamfered corners, set in recess in sandstone wall. Raised lettering to front 'Letters only' and having S[aorstát] É[ireann]' casting to door.

Appraisal

Cast-iron post boxes such as this are becoming increasing rare throughout Ireland, often being replaced by modern, plastic boxes. The modest form of this box is enhanced by the simple, well-designed lettering and Saorstát Éireann emblem, which add historical and artistic interest to the box. The post box is a manifestation of the confidence of the emerging Irish Republic in the early to mid-twentieth century.
