Description

Railway viaduct, built 1872, carrying disused railway line over River Blackwater. Comprises wrought-iron lattice girders, supported by five rock-faced limestone piers at west side over flood plain, with elliptical arches to east side having brick voussoirs, eastmost arch springing from rock at its east side. Metal handrail to parapets.

Appraisal

This viaduct, designed by James Otway, forms a notable and striking feature in the landscape. The materials used in its construction are typical of nineteenth-century railway engineering. The use of wrought-iron latticed girders gives the building a very light appearance, in contrast to the solidity of the masonry piers. It now takes the disused Fermoy-Waterford railway line across the Blackwater, and is a reminder of the great railway age.
