Grotto to east side of yard to rear of Castle Hyde, erected c. 1830, comprising stepped structure having stepped plan. Coursed rubble limestone and sandstone walls. Three round-arched entrance openings to single-storey middle section, with rubble voussoirs, end entrances housing decorative urns on pedestals. Stone-blocked similar archway to two-storey south side of main wall and to upper level of south side wall, former having inset square-headed window. Lower level of south side wall having timber battened door with segmental arch of rubble voussoirs. Small courtyard to front of grotto having lawned areas with sculpted sphinxes on moulded limestone plinths, flanking central sculpted fountain.
This grotto, unusually close to a country house, is an elaborate and extensive structure, having a stepped plan and section. Its large round-headed openings dominate and give the structure its main focus. The grotto is enhanced by the garden with its sphinxes and fountain, which links the grotto visually with the house.
