Description

Triple-arch limestone road bridge over River Clyda, built c. 1750 and widened or rebuilt c.1800. Ashlar stone walls and voussoirs to round arches. Ashlar V-cutwaters to both elevations. Rubble stone parapet walls. Stonework visible to soffits indicates that bridge was widened to north side.

Appraisal

This bridge is a fine example of the technical achievements of local craftsmen. It is constructed with ashlar limestone masonry contrasting with the rubble parapet walls. There is evidence of widening and repair and the south side of the bridge could pre-date the 1727 Bridge Act stipulating minimum widths for bridges.
