Entrance gateway to Castlelohort, built c. 1880, comprising vehicular entrance flanked by pedestrian entrances. Curved coursed rubble sweep walls, with square-plan limestone peck-dressed ashlar piers to entrances having chamfered corners and pointed caps, bearing decorative double-leaf wrought-iron gates. Wrought-iron lock piece having circular ring-pull with decorative marigold surround to bolt on reverse side. Limestone threshold stones to pedestrian gates.
This monumental entrance exhibits ornate detailing and fine craftsmanship and forms a grand entrance to Castlelohort. The limestone masonry was clearly executed by skilled craftsmen, and the contrasting coursed rubble walls and limestone ashlar piers add textural interest to the site. The detailing to the stone piers is enhanced by the decorative details applied to the wrought-iron gates.
