Description

Five-arch limestone road bridge over River Deel, built c. 1800, with round-headed arches of roughly coursed limestone construction, outer arches now disused. Roughly dressed limestone coping to parapets walls, with cut limestone voussoirs to arches and cut limestone V-cutwaters to south elevation, concrete reinforcement to piers and concrete V-cutwaters to north elevation.

Appraisal

The simple elegant form of this road bridge is much enhanced by the textural and chromatic variation created by the dressed stone walls and cut limestone voussoirs. This bridge is a reminder of the engineering achievements and the quality of local craftsmanship in the early nineteenth century.
