Description

Wall-mounted cast-iron post box, c.1880, with raised V.R. insignia and crown. Rectangular aperture and display panel with maker’s label to base and open letter flap. Set in red brick surround and mounted in rubble stone wall.

Appraisal

This cast-iron post box is an integral part of the social and urban fabric of the area. The V.R. motif indicates the reign of Queen Victoria (1837-1901) and is a reminder of Ireland's history as part of the British Empire. Though the design is simple, the high relief casting of the lettering and crown are well-executed.
