Description

Detached three-bay single-storey former guard house, dated 1855, now in use as offices. Hipped artificial roof with rendered chimneystack and replacement rainwater goods on timber eaves board. Squared rubble limestone to east elevation with limestone quoins and date plaque inscribed '1855'. Roughcast render to remaining elevations with limestone quoins. Square-headed window openings with limestone voussoirs to east elevation, limestone sills and replacement uPVC windows. Some windows blocked. Square-headed door opening to east elevation in dressed limestone block-and-start surround with limestone voussoirs, now blocked. Square-headed door opening to south elevation with moulded render surround and replacement door. Set within barracks complex.

Appraisal

A former guard house which is a noteworthy addition to the architectural heritage of Collins Barracks, forming part of a significant group with the other historic buildings on the site. The fine stone front elevation displays quality craftsmanship.
