Description

Attached five-bay three-storey hotel, built c.1820, with later five-bay, two-storey block to side (east). Formerly a pair of two- and three-bay houses. Pitched artificial slate roof having rendered chimneystacks with metal rainwater goods. Lined-and-ruled render walls and quoins. Camber-headed window openings having render sills and incised voussoirs with uPVC casement windows. Segmental-headed door opening to front (north) elevation, approached by limestone step, within render doorcase comprising engaged Doric columns surmounted by entablature, having timber panelled door. Wrought-iron railings to front (north) elevation, having triangular-profiled milestone within.

Appraisal

Formerly a pair of houses and now in single use, this substantial building occupies a prominent site at the entrance to the town. The retention of historic fabric such as its fine render details, wrought-iron railings and attached cast-iron milestone add to its character.
