Description

Freestanding hexagon-plan cast-iron post box, c.1870, with decorative moulded cap and finial featuring foliage and beading motifs. Royal insignia of Queen Victoria and crest and lettering cast in high relief. Moulded base with maker's mark.

Appraisal

An unusually ornate Victorian post box exhibiting the finer artistic possibilities of iron casting. The recognisable pillar box form has been elaborated with decorative beading and foliated detailing to the cap. Fabricated during the reign of Queen Victoria, this rare example contributes significantly to the streetscape of Skibbereen.
