Freestanding eight-span railway viaduct, built c. 1925, spanning River Blackwater, comprising steel box-girder structure with steel parapet railings and having concrete piers to river with V-cutwaters, and steel supports to land with cross braces.
This viaduct replaced an earlier structure in the 1920s and is constructed of materials characteristic of functional architecture of this time. It is solidly constructed with concrete walls and steel supports and forms an integral part of a complex of related railway structures and bridges in the area. Its large size and wide spans offer an unusual and imposing feature on the townscape.
