Description

Remains of Kilrush House estate including: Gateway on a symmetrical plan comprising pair of drag edged dragged limestone ashlar panelled piers on plinths having beaded cornices on friezes on stringcourses below block capping with drag edged dragged limestone ashlar outer piers on plinths having beaded cornices on friezes on stringcourses below block capping supporting spear head-detailed cast-iron railings centred on spear head-detailed cast-iron pedestrian gates.  Road fronted at entrance to grounds of Kilrush House.  NOTE: A relic of the Kilrush House estate following the destruction (1897) and subsequent demolition (1973) of the eponymous country house (1808) described as 'a handsome and spacious mansion immediately adjoining the town [Kilrush] and commanding an extensive view of the Shannon' (Lewis 1837 II, 205).
