Description

Detached seven-bay single-storey national school, dated 1894. The national school is constructed in coursed rubble granite with block and start brick dressings. There is a small flat-roofed single-storey addition to the north-west corner. The timber sheeted door had a plain six pane fanlight and is set within a flat-headed opening. Window openings are flat-headed with six over nine uPVC replacement frames. The pitched roof is finished in natural slate and has overhanging eaves and cast-iron rainwater goods. There are a number of recent metal vents to the roof. The national school is set in a narrow site and is slightly set back behind a low granite wall with square gate pillars and a wrought-iron gate.

Appraisal

Despite the loss of original windows this small national school is in very good and original condition. It has been in use as a school for more than a century and it adds a sense of continuity to the town’s heritage. It also adds variety and interest to the streetscape.
