Pier, built 1886, of mass concrete with sea gravel aggregate, having concrete storm wall to seaward side, extended, c.1930. Concrete steps to seaward side. Cast-iron bollards and mooring posts, and cut granite coping stones to south-west (landward) side. Lighthouse to north-west end.
A notable example of early concrete, this well built and sturdy pier is a reminder of the importance of maritime activities in the locality. While Wicklow was long used as a natural harbour, the construction of piers in the town contributed to its social and economic development in the late nineteenth century. It forms part of an interesting group of maritime structures, including the lighthouse, quays, coastguard station, coastguard boat house, lifeguard station and the other lighthouses nearby.
