Appraisal

A farmhouse erected by John Lloyd (1780-1853; Hickey alias Doyle 1868, 73) representing an important component of the early nineteenth-century domestic built heritage of south County Wexford with the architectural value of the composition confirmed by such attributes as the deliberate alignment maximising on scenic vistas overlooking gently rolling grounds; the compact plan form centred on a Classically-detailed breakfront; and the diminishing in scale of the widely spaced openings on each floor producing a graduated visual impression with the principal "apartments" defined by Sir Richard Morrison (1767-1849)-like arcaded openings (see 15700329). Having been reasonably well maintained, the form and massing survive intact together with substantial quantities of the original fabric, both to the exterior and to the interior, including crown of cylinder glazing panels in hornless sash frames: meanwhile, contemporary joinery; restrained chimneypieces; and decorative plasterwork enrichments, all highlight the artistic potential of the composition. Furthermore, a courtyard of 'out-offices' (1826); and a walled garden (----), all continue to contribute positively to the group and setting values of an estate having historic connections with the Lloyd family including Henry Howlin Lloyd (1813-55) 'of Thornville in this County [Wexford]' (cf. 15704820); and the Meadows family including Joseph Meadows (1809-77) and Anne Meadows (née Lloyd) (1814-96; cf. 15607051; 15704789; 15705322); and Major Abraham James Howlin Meadows JP (1853-1913), 'Retired Major C.M. Forces late of Thornville Ballycogley [sic] County Wexford' (Calendars of Wills and Administrations 1913, 418; cf. 15704820).
