Description

Handball alley, built 1912, on a rectangular plan with cement rendered concrete block boundary wall to perimeter having lichen-spotted coping. Extended, 1940, producing present composition. Damaged, 2004. Restored, 2005. Set on strand.

Appraisal

A handball alley representing an integral component of the early twentieth-century built heritage of south County Wexford. NOTE: A recent plaque (2010) commemorates 'SGT. JAMES CURRANT PTE. PETER CONLAN PTE. JAMES KEOGH [and] PTE. JOSEPH TINSLEY WHO LOST THEIR LIVES...27TH JANUARY 1941 WHILE MAKING SAFE A SEA MINE WASHED ASHORE'.
