Appraisal

A gate lodge not only contributing positively to the group and setting values of the Woodville House estate, but also clearly illustrating the continued development or "improvement" of the estate in response to the cutting-through of the New Ross Branch of the Dublin Wicklow and Wexford Railway (DWWR) line (opened 1887) by the Dublin Wicklow and Wexford Railway (DWWR) Company with the architectural value of the composition confirmed by such attributes as the compact rectilinear plan form centred on an expressed porch; the rock faced surface finish offset by silver-grey granite dressings not only demonstrating good quality workmanship, but also compounding a sober two-tone palette; and the decorative timber work embellishing the roofline. Having been well maintained, the elementary form and massing survive intact together with substantial quantities of the original fabric, both to the exterior and to the interior, thus upholding the character or integrity of a gate lodge forming part of a neat self-contained group alongside an adjacent gateway (see 15702912) with the resulting ensemble making a pleasing visual statement in a suburban street scene.
