Description
Gateway, extant 1863, on a symmetrical plan comprising pair of benchmark-inscribed granite ashlar piers on chamfered plinths having cut-granite stringcourses below shallow pyramidal capping supporting spear head-detailed wrought iron double gates. Now disused. Road fronted at entrance to grounds of Ballinkeel House.
Appraisal
A gateway making a pleasing, if largely inconspicuous visual statement in a sylvan street scene at a secondary entrance on to the grounds of the Ballinkeel House estate: meanwhile, a benchmark remains of additional interest for the connections with cartography and the preparation of maps by the Ordnance Survey (established 1824).
