Description

Gateway, designed 1889; extant 1903, on a symmetrical plan comprising pair of terracotta banded red brick English bond piers on "Cyma Recta"- or "Cyma Reversa"-detailed cushion courses on plinths having "Cyma Recta"- or "Cyma Reversa"-detailed cornices below capping supporting wrought iron double gates. Road fronted at entrance to grounds of Brownswood.

Appraisal

A gateway erected to a design by William Mansfield Mitchell (1842-1910) of Leinster Street, Dublin, forming part of a neat self-contained group alongside an adjacent gate lodge (see 15702622) with the resulting ensemble making a pleasing visual statement in a sylvan street scene at the entrance on to the grounds of the Brownswood estate.
