Description

Gateway, extant 1840, on a symmetrical plan comprising pair of lichen-covered granite ashlar piers on cruciform plans on moulded cushion courses on plinths having "Cyma Recta"- or "Cyma Reversa"-detailed cornices on "triglyph"-detailed friezes on entablatures below abbreviated ball-finial topped capping. Road fronted at entrance to grounds of Wilton Castle.

Appraisal

A gateway not only making a pleasing visual statement in a sylvan street scene at the principal entrance on to the grounds of the Wilton Castle estate, but also surviving as an interesting relic of the eighteenth-century 'mansion in the dull style of the period of William and Mary' (Hickey alias Doyle 1868, 179; cf. 15702563).
