Description

Gateway, built 1844, on a symmetrical plan comprising pair of lichen-spotted granite ashlar piers on cut-granite plinths having battlemented capping supporting quatrefoil-detailed timber double gates. Road fronted at entrance to grounds of Wells House.

Appraisal

A gateway erected to a design by Daniel Robertson (d. 1849) making a pleasing visual statement in a sylvan street scene at the entrance on to the grounds of the Wells House estate (cf. 15702550). NOTE: A surviving drawing (August 1835) titled "General Plan for rotoring the Great Avenue at Wells the Seat of Robert Doyne Esquire" shows an alternative scheme with gate lodges.
