Description

Pier-mounted cast-iron "lamp box" post box, between 1910-22, with "GR [Georgius Rex]" royal cipher. Set in cement rendered pier.

Appraisal

A "lamp box" post box supplied by A. [Andrew] Handyside and Company (established 1848) of Derby and London representing an interesting example of mass-produced cast-iron work making a pleasing, if largely inconspicuous visual statement in a rural street scene with embellishments identifying the artistic potential of the composition including the King George V (1865-1936; r. 1910-22) royal cipher of additional significance as an imprinted reminder of the period when Ireland formed part of the British Empire.
