Description

Gateway, extant 1840, on a symmetrical plan comprising pair of granite ashlar piers on benchmark-inscribed cut-granite chamfered plinths having stepped capping supporting replacement steel double gates with granite ashlar outer piers on cut-granite chamfered plinths having stepped capping. Road fronted at entrance to grounds of Mount Henry House.

Appraisal

A gateway forming part of a self-contained group alongside an adjacent gate lodge (see 156070--) with the resulting ensemble making a pleasing visual statement in a sylvan street scene at the entrance on to the grounds of the Mount Henry House estate: meanwhile, a benchmark remains of additional interest for the connections with cartography and the preparation of maps by the Ordnance Survey (established 1824).
