Description
Attached three-bay two-storey house, extant 1882, on a T-shaped plan with single-bay (two-bay deep) two-storey lower central return (west). Occupied, 1901; 1911. Pitched slate roof on a T-shaped plan centred on pitched slate roof (west) with clay ridge tiles, coping to gables with rendered red brick Running bond chimney stacks to apexes having chevron- or saw tooth-detailed stringcourses below chamfered capping supporting tallow terracotta octagonal or tapered pots, and cast-iron rainwater goods on rendered eaves retaining cast-iron downpipes. Rendered walls. Square-headed central door opening approached by two cut-granite steps, timber doorcase with panelled pilasters on cut-granite padstones supporting shallow cornice on flush beaded frieze on fluted scroll consoles, and concealed dressings framing timber panelled door having overlight. Square-headed window openings with cut-granite sills, and concealed dressings framing two-over-two timber sash windows. Square-headed window openings to rear (west) elevation with cut-granite sills, and concealed dressings framing two-over-two timber sash windows. Interior including (ground floor): central hall retaining carved timber surrounds to door openings framing timber panelled doors, and plasterwork cornice to ceiling; and carved timber surrounds to door openings to remainder framing timber panelled doors with carved timber surrounds to window openings framing timber panelled shutters. Street fronted with cast-iron railings to perimeter centred on cast-iron gate.
Appraisal
A house representing an important component of the mid nineteenth-century built heritage of Wexford with the architectural value of the composition, one erected for occupation by the manager of the adjacent Wexford Gas Consumers' Company complex (established 1865), confirmed by such attributes as the compact plan form centred on a Classically-detailed doorcase demonstrating good quality workmanship; and the very slight diminishing in scale of the openings on each floor producing a feint graduated visual impression. Having been reasonably well maintained, the elementary form and massing survive intact together with substantial quantities of the original fabric, both to the exterior and to the interior where contemporary joinery; and plasterwork refinements, all highlight the artistic potential of a house making a pleasing visual statement in Trinity Street.
