Description

Gateway, extant 1863, on a symmetrical plan comprising pair of granite ashlar panelled piers on cut-granite chamfered plinths having "Cyma Recta"- or "Cyma Reversa"-detailed cornices below capping supporting "Fleur-de-Lys"-detailed wrought iron double gates with granite ashlar panelled outer piers on benchmark-inscribed cut-granite chamfered plinths having cut-granite capping supporting "Fleur-de-Lys"-detailed wrought iron gates. Street fronted at entrance to grounds of Saint Peter's College.

Appraisal

A gateway forming part of a neat self-contained group alongside an adjacent gate lodge (15504016) with the resulting ensemble not only making a pleasing visual statement in a sylvan street scene at the entrance on to the grounds of the Saint Peter's College complex, but also clearly illustrating the continued development or "improvement" of the complex in the mid nineteenth century: meanwhile, a benchmark remains of additional interest for the connections with cartography and the preparation of maps by the Ordnance Survey (established 1824).
