Detached three-bay single-storey gate lodge, extant 1853, on a cruciform plan centred on single-bay single-storey gabled projecting open porch; single-bay (single-bay deep) single-storey central return (east). Part refenestrated, ----. Now disused. Pitched slate roof on a cruciform plan centred on pitched (gabled) slate roof (porch) with lichen-spotted clay ridge tiles centred on rendered chimney stack having stepped capping supporting terracotta pots, decorative timber bargeboards to gables on "Cavetto"-detailed timber purlins, and cast-iron rainwater goods retaining cast-iron downpipes. Rendered walls. Pointed-arch central opening with cut-granite threshold, and concealed dressings having chamfered rebated reveals with hood moulding on monolithic label stops. Square-headed central door opening with monolithic surround framing replacement glazed timber panelled door. Triangular-headed flanking window openings with concealed dressings having chamfered reveals framing replacement timber casement windows. Triangular-headed window openings to gables to side elevations with cut-granite sills, and concealed dressings framing two-over-two timber sash windows. Set back from line of street at entrance to grounds of Saint Peter's College.
A gate lodge not only contributing positively to the group and setting values of the Saint Peter's College complex, but also clearly illustrating the continued development or "improvement" of the complex in the mid nineteenth century with the architectural value of the composition, 'a handsome lodge which some years since was built within the demesne' (Lacy 1863, 407), suggested by such attributes as the compact symmetrical footprint centred on an expressed porch; and the decorative timber work embellishing the roofline. Having been reasonably well maintained, the elementary form and massing survive intact together with substantial quantities of the original fabric: however, the piecemeal introduction of replacement fittings to the openings, however, has not had a beneficial impact on the external expression or integrity of a gate lodge forming part of a neat self-contained group alongside and adjacent gateway (see 15604017) with the resulting ensemble making a pleasing visual statement in a sylvan street scene.
