Freestanding monument, erected 1794, on a square plan on benchmark-inscribed plinth. Street fronted on concrete brick cobbled island.
A monument erected 'at the expense of the Corporation [of Wexford] to the late Major Charles Vallotton [1746-93]' representing an important component of the late eighteenth-century built heritage of County Wexford (cf. 15503033). NOTE: Although largely weathered, and now barely legible, the inscription is remembered as: "To the Memory of MAJOR CHARLES VALLOTTON murdered at Wexford in Ireland July 15 1793 whilst in the act of expostulating with a lawless Mob" (The Gentlemen's Magazine 1793, 845).
