Description

Cast-iron post box attached to timber post, erected c.1950, with raised 'P&T' cipher in Gaelic/Celtic Revival script to base. Letter. Box has curved top and information panel to centre below letter slot. Located adjacent to rural cross roads to the west of Boher Roman Catholic church.

Appraisal

An attractive, if simple, item of street furniture that represents an early-surviving artefact of mass-produced cast-iron ware. The raised Gaelic/Celtic Revival-style script is of particular interest as a reminder of the promotion of a national identity following the establishment of the Independent State. It is located close to a rural junction, a common site for post boxes. This cast-iron post box, which is still in use, is an important, if subtle, feature in the landscape to the west of Boher.
