Description

Gateway, erected c.1880, comprising a pair of cast-iron gate posts on octagonal plan with ball finials over supporting a pair of wrought-iron flat-bar gates. Rubble limestone boundary walls run away to the north and the south. Located to the southwest of Killucan/Rathwire at the entrance to a pair of mid-to-late-nineteenth century houses.

Appraisal

A good quality set of cast-iron gate posts with wrought-iron gates in a simple but attractive design. This gateway serves as the entrance to a mid-to-late nineteenth-century house, one of a number of similar houses along Riverstown Road, which have an estate character and may have been built under the patronage of Long Longford. It is an interesting feature along the main approach road into Killucan/Rathwire from the south.
