Description

Pair of timber level crossing gates with cast-iron fittings, erected c.1855. Located adjacent to Multyfarnham Train Station to the southwest of the village.

Appraisal

A well-maintained pair of level crossing gates that retain their early form and original cast-iron fittings. These gates were originally erected as part of the Midland and Great Western Railway's Mullingar to Sligo line, which opened as far as Longford Town in 1855. They form part of an interesting group of railway structures associated with Multyfarnham Railway Station (15304024) and remain an important part of the industrial and civil engineering heritage of Westmeath.
