Description

Single-arch railway bridge, c.1859, with rusticated limestone piers, parapets and voussoirs with dressed string course and copings. Located to the west of Athlone carrying Lower Road over railway line.

Appraisal

A good quality robust railway bridge with rusticated masonry, typical of mid nineteenth-century railway architecture. This bridge was originally built as part of the Great Southern and Western Railway Company's Portarlington to Athlone Midland line, which opened in October 1859.
