Description

Retaining wall of river, incorporating slipway and flights of limestone steps, built c.1847, with adjoining jetty. Located on east bank of River Shannon.

Appraisal

An attractive and well-built promenade and retaining wall that is now a local amenity. It was originally constructed as part of the Shannon Navigation Works carried out by the 1840s and 1850s to open up the River Shannon to increased river trade and make Athlone a major inland port.
