Description
Entrance gates, erected c.1880, comprising granite gate piers on square-plan having fluted granite capstones over and with wrought-iron double gates, c.1950. Set in quadrant walls constructed of coursed limestone rubble with crenellated coping. Located at entrance of Newcourt House (west).
Appraisal
A very fine set of mid-Victorian gate piers of high artistic merit that retain their early character. These gate piers form part of an interesting group of structures associated with Newcourt House to the west. They remain attractive features on the Ballymahon Road to the north of Athlone.
