Description

Detached three-bay single-storey post office, built c.1840, with gabled porch. Pitched artificial slate roof with carved pinnacles and rendered chimneystack. Dressed limestone walls with ashlar quoins and plaque. Tooled limestone dressings to window openings. Pointed arch door opening with hood moulding above to porch. Entrance to west gable now in use as window. Extension to the rear. Cast-iron railings set on limestone plinths, with dressed limestone gates piers and cast-iron double gates.

Appraisal

This building forms a interesting group with the former police station to the south, which was built at the same time and in a similar Tudor Gothic style. The architectural form of this post office is enhanced by the masonry details, such as the quoins and dressings to the openings. The carved pinnacles add artistic interest.
