Detached gable-fronted Gothic Revival church, built 1898. Six-bay side elevations to nave with porch and sacristy projections. Rock faced limestone walls with corner buttresses, ashlar plinth course, and carved eaves dentils. Lancet windows with ashlar limestone surrounds and sills. Pointed arch door opening with pair of timber doors. Pitched slate roof with ashlar limestone chimneystacks and bellcote. Twentieth-century cemetery to west. Limestone gate piers with cast-iron railings and gate. Bridge to site.
Kilmainham village church is of apparent architectural design and detail. The ashlar dressings and rock-faced limestone walls create interesting textural variations. The setting is enhanced by the boundary walls with stone gate piers and cast-iron gates. The cemetery, parochial house and grotto form an interesting group with the church grounds.
