Freestanding cut-limestone Celtic High Cross-style monument, unveiled 1925, on a rectangular plan on rope twist-detailed pedestal on ogee-detailed stepped base. Set back from line of road on a corner site with cut-limestone chamfered plinth to perimeter.
A monument erected 'IN HONOURED MEMORY OF THOSE FROM DROGHEDA AND DISTRICT WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR'. The monument was promoted by the Drogheda Memorial Committee whose president, Arthur James Francis Plunkett (1859-1929) of Killeen Castle, had seen active service as a major in the Prince of Wales's Leinster Regiment (Irish Times 6th November 1925). The subscriptions totalled £800 while the site was donated by Drogheda Corporation. The monument is signed by Madden Brothers of Sheephouse and the bronze plates supplied by Rooney Brothers of Dublin are inscribed with the names, rank and regiment of the 368 men of Drogheda who were lost during the Great War (1914-8). The monument was unveiled on Armistice Day 1925 (Drogheda Independent 14th November 1925). The monument was originally enclosed by railings by Farrell and Sons of Beauparc, County Meath, and, while those are now long gone, their plinth survives.
