Description

Attached stone wall and gateway, built c. 1760. Squared rubble stone wall, ashlar limestone coping, red brick infill to north end of west elevation, recent roughcast render to rear (east). Segmental-headed carriage arch to south of west elevation, tooled limestone block-and-start surround, recent metal gates. Carpark to east, fronts onto street to west.

Appraisal

Though the original function of this gateway is unclear, it may have been associated with the custom house that was formerly located to the north. High quality craftsmanship is displayed in the finely tooled surround to the carriage arch indicating that this was an important entranceway in the eighteenth century.
