Description

Wall-mounted cast-iron post box, erected c. 1915, with raised "GR" royal cipher. Foundry name J.T. Allen & Co. London. Set in the plain painted render of the gable wall of the Christian Brothers School.

Appraisal

An attractive item of street furniture, an early-surviving artefact of mass-produced cast-iron ware. Raised details contribute significantly to the artistic design quality of the piece. The royal cipher serves as a historic reminder of the period when Ireland formed part of the British Empire.
