Description
Detached seven-bay two-storey over part basement house, extant 1837, on a symmetrical plan including two-bay (three-bay deep) two-storey bow-ended wings. Occupied, 1901; 1911. Adapted to alternative use, 2001. Bow-ended hipped slate roof with ridge tiles, rendered chimney stacks having stringcourses below capping supporting terracotta tapered pots, and cast-iron rainwater goods on rendered stepped eaves with cast-iron downpipes. Rendered, ruled and lined walls with rusticated rendered piers to corners. Segmental-headed central door opening in square-headed recess approached by flight of four cut-granite steps between arrow head-detailed mild steel railings, rendered doorcase with fluted pilasters on stepped plinths supporting ogee-detailed cornice on dosserets framing timber panelled double doors having fanlight. Square-headed window openings (basement) with cut-granite sills, and concealed dressings framing three-over-three timber sash windows. Square-headed window openings with cut-granite sills, and concealed dressings framing nine-over-six (ground floor) or six-over-six (first floor) timber sash windows. Interior including (ground floor): central hall retaining carved timber surrounds to door openings framing timber panelled doors, and decorative plasterwork cornice to ceiling; staircase hall retaining carved timber surrounds to door openings framing timber panelled doors, cantilevered staircase on an elliptical plan with balusters supporting carved timber banister terminating in volute, and carved timber surrounds to door openings to landing framing timber panelled doors; and carved timber surrounds to door openings to remainder framing timber panelled doors with carved timber surrounds to window openings framing timber panelled shutters on panelled risers. Set in relandscaped grounds.
Appraisal
A house representing an important component of the domestic built heritage of the suburban outskirts of Waterford with the architectural value of the composition confirmed by such attributes as the bow-ended plan form centred on a Classically-detailed doorcase showing a cobweb-looped collared hub-and-spoke fanlight; and the diminishing in scale of the openings on each floor producing a graduated visual impression with the principal "apartments" showing polygonal bay windows. Having been sympathetically repurposed, the form and massing survive intact together with substantial quantities of the original or replicated fabric, both to the exterior and to the interior, thus upholding much of the character of a house having historic connections with the Garraway family including Colonel Charles Sutton Garraway (1833-1916) and Lieutenant-Colonel Sir Edward Charles Frederick Garraway (1865-1932) '[of] The Residence, Maserw, Basutoland; Rockshire, Waterford' (Thom's Irish Who's Who 1923, 90). NOTE: The interior potentially includes 'a magnificent ballroom or drawing room…with good doorcases and a ceiling of fine late eighteenth-century plasterwork' (Bence-Jones 1978, 244).
